Which Drugstore Foundation is best for You? #MakeUp

vivian wynter

Hola Elle Scoop Beauties!

It’s Vivian Wynter your Professional MUA and friend in Beauty!  Today we’re conquering the ever-changing world of drugstore foundations.  Just last night one of my clients called me from the store in hopes of a great foundation recommendation.  As a matter of fact, my co-worker/client also asked me this morning, when she goes to the store to get her foundation, if they are out of the color she thinks is right for her should she go darker?  lighter?  Or just walk out with nothing in fear of not being able to buy her “exact color”.
It was clear to me that this is probably a good topic to cover, as many women often ask for my recommendation on this subject.
All of these recommendations are great and were hand-picked by me, but there is one brand that blows the competitors out of the water.

When it comes to foundation, it really pays to find the perfect one for you. After all, all the eye makeup and lip products in the world won’t make you look gorgeous if your skin looks blah. On the bright side, I have found that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get flawless-looking skin. In fact, there are plenty of foundations that are not considered “luxury” products that do just that! Read on to see what they are.

The market is saturated, and these are in no particular order (except for #1)  as each foundation is made for different purposes and skin types.

*GLAM TIP* If your local drugstore is out of the foundation you would like to purchase, as a general rule, go darker rather than lighter (esp. in these summer months) to avoid the dreaded “Jaw line marker of a bad color choice!”*

Some drugstores are better stocked than others.  Try to find ones that have the widest selections from each line to ensure you walk out with the foundation color that is for you!

As an example: If you need 28 B and they are out of that color.. get 29 (one shade darker) as opposed to 28 A or 27.  Does that make sense?  Go darker rather than lighter!
Adversly, in the Fall/Winter months it is safe to go one shade lighter.

 Here are my top picks!

1.) L’Oreal True Match : $10.99

Loreal 1

*Glam Tip* This is my personal/professional fave!

This my absolute FAVE! I had the opportunity to test this product before it came onto the market and instantly fell in love!  This is a water based foundation and blends so perfectly.

It gives more coverage than the others tested, with a beautiful velvety satin finish rather than a dewy one, and really holds.  This foundation comes in 48 shades (by far the most to choose from)

Bonus: It makes skin look younger, because it reflects light!
L’Oréal True Match Super-Blendable Makeup, $10.99 Gives more coverage than the others tested, with a beautiful velvety satin finish rather than a dewy one, and it really holds. I think it makes skin look young, because it reflects light. A good product, especially for more mature skin. (C.B.)

2.) Neutrogena Mineral Sheers : $14.49

Neutrogena 2

* GLAM TIP* Be sure to wash the brush AT LEAST once a week to ensure flawless makeup and prevent breakouts!

Beautiful. It really lets the skin breathe because it’s so sheer. Erases redness and gives a fresh, healthy glow to the skin without the look of a ton of makeup. This is the drugstore alternative to the latest mineral makeup craze!
I am generally not a fan of brush on makeup.  In my experience, because of it’s convenience- people are not diligent about cleaning the brush as they should be and often end up with a streaked, un-even makeup look.

If you promise me you will wash your brush , here are your instructions on using this great foundation:
Put a few strokes on the cheeks and across the forehead and blend back and forth in long side seeping motions.

This formula is good for all ages, or if you have sensitive skin and want it to be chic, smooth and silky.

Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Liquid Makeup, $14.49 Beautiful. It really lets the skin breathe because it’s so sheer. Erases redness and gives a fresh, healthy glow to the skin without the look of a ton of makeup. Just be careful to not overdo. Put a few strokes on the cheeks and across the forehead and blend. This formula is good for all ages, or if you have sensitive skin and want it to be chic, smooth and silky.

3.) Revlon Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup: $12.99
Revlon 3
*GLAM TIP* Use a dime-size amount- it’s better to start off with less and add more!

It’s more of a dewy, tinted moisturizer that goes on to match your skin tone. I wore it to work one day- I really liked it!  It gave me a healthy, easy glow and feels fresh for the summer.
Pop a little bit on your finger tips and blend as you would a moisturizer, all over the face including under the eyes.

Revlon Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup, $12.99 It’s more of a dewy, tinted moisturizer that goes on to match your skin tone. I really like this on myself — I wore it to work one day. It gives you a glow, and it feels fresh for summer. Pop a little bit on your finger tips and blend as you would a moisturizer. It’s a healthy, easy glow. Use a dime-size amount — it’s better to start off with less and add more.

4.) Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation: $9.49

Maybelline 4

*GLAM TIP* Blend this foundation in with your moisturizer, for the feel of nothing on your skin!

Sheer and dewy (and very similar to MAC Face and Body, which is the MOST SHEER foundation they carry).
This product is light and feels like nothing on the skin.
It’s great for people who don’t want to look as if they’re wearing makeup.

The difference between this foundation and the before mentioned Neutrogena foundation, is that it
comes in an extended array of deep as well as fair tones!

Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation, $9.49 Sheer and dewy (and very similar to MAC Face and Body). This product is light — it can be blended in with your moisturizer — and it feels like nothing on the skin. It’s great for people who don’t want to look as if they’re wearing makeup.

5.) L’Oreal Paris Ideal Balance QuickStick Foundation for Combination Skin: $13.99

Loeral 6

*GLAM TIP* This foundation works double time as your concealer as well!

Glamour Girls will  love how convenient this product is. Just toss it in your purse, and When you go to the ladies room to freshen up, you can fix every flaw on your face!  This  covers dark circles [and] discolorations smoothly for a flawless look and is great for combination skin.

6.) Almay Clear Complexion Powder for Oily Skin: $9.99

Almay 7

*GLAM TIP* Apply this right after your moisturizer for the most natural look!

Glamour Girls will love how they can  can use this powder every single day and not worry about getting breakouts.  It’s light, makes your skin feel fresh, and did you hear what I said- no breakouts!  The colors are natual and blend well.   It also controls shine.  (A plus for my girls with the natural, but  unwanted “dewy” look”)

Bonus: It doesn’t feel cakey like many pressed powders!

7.)  Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer, $11.89

Neutrogena 8

*GLAM TIP*  This “foundation” is great when you don’t feel like getting made up, but still want
medium to sheer coverage, and is excellent for mature skin!

While this is more of a tinted moisturizer, it still covers imperfections.
It features Retinol to reduce fine lines, and SPF protection (which we ALL need more of) and also makes your skin appear even and healthy.

8.) Almay Line Smoothing Compact Makeup for Dry Skin:$ 14.78Almay 9

*GLAM TIP* I suggest this one for mature skin as it really does improve the appearance of “texture” in the skin (lines, wrinkles, etc.)

This foundation is especially formulated for Dry/Dehydrated skin and is in the form of  a cream to a powder, that sets to a flawless finish.
It’s lightweight and super easy to tote around.
Even though it’s formulated for dry skin, it doesn’t look greasy or overly made up,  (Glamour Girls will love this!)
